Rory McIlroy is ‘just waiting for the phone call’ that will see him head home after revealing some lovely news at the BMW Championship
We may have a 29-man Tour Championship after Rory McIlroy revealed he may have to withdraw from the PGA Tour season finale.
And McIlroy has pretty good reason for potentially missing out on defending the title he won at East Lake last year – wife Erica Stoll is pregnant with the couple’s first child.
The 31-year-old said caddie Harry Diamond has been keeping his phone in his pocket during rounds just in case.
“I’m just waiting for the phone call,” he said at the BMW Championship.
And if it comes? “I’m out of here.”
McIlroy added that he and Erica are expecting a girl and she is “not far away now”.
“I’m going to play in many more Tour Championships, and it’s only going to be the birth of your first child once,” he added.
“That trumps anything else.”
At least it might explain his poor form and McIlroy admits his mind has been wandering in recent weeks.
Since golf’s restart the four-time major champion has recorded finishes of T32, T41, T11, T32, T47, T33, T65 and T12.
Still, at least he’s got the nappy factor to look forward to. And what better timing than with two majors in the next three months? Just ask Mark Calcavecchia and Danny Willett, among others.
Just give Rory the Green Jacket now…
