Petition to keep golf courses open: Third time lucky?

The new call on the Government asks to “allow golf to be played with appropriate safety measures” during the lockdown in England

A new petition to keep golf courses open and for the sport to be played during lockdown in England has been launched.

Paul Marton’s call, which has attracted more than 2,000 signatures since clubs across the nation were instructed to close on Monday night, is being hosted on Parliament’s Petitions website.

Titled “Allow golf to be played with appropriate safety measures”, it asks signatories to urge that: “The Government should allow golf courses to remain open during the second lockdown (sic), and any future restrictions.

“Shops and clubhouses can close, but courses should be allowed to remain open, with social distancing in place.”

It continues: “The risk of Covid transmission is lower outdoors, so there is no reason for golf to be stopped.

“It provides important exercise for many people and has numerous mental health benefits. Don’t allow golf to be stopped.”

A similar petition to keep golf courses and facilities open, started when English course were last shut in November, gained huge public support.

Gathering 10,000 signatures within hours, a total of 257,267 people put their name to the cause and was backed by a number of golf’s governing bodies, including England Golf.

That ensured a debate in Parliament and it was discussed in late November at Westminster Hall, but without any notable conclusions being reached.

The Government responds to any petition that gains more than 10,000 signatures while a petition is considered for a Parliamentary debate if it reaches 100,000 names.

This is the third time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic that golf clubs and courses in England have been forced to lock the gates and, in each case, they have remained closed until restrictions were eased – despite entreaties to Whitehall.

They were shut for nearly two months during the first national lockdown in March and then again for nearly four weeks during November and the start of December last year.

Ministers are warning the new restrictions could last until March.
