The 2020 Masters begins this Thursday! Let’s take a look at the Draftkings showdown contest for round one!
Before I discuss my Draftkings player selections I want to clearly state that this article is specifically focused on the first round showdown contest. The showdown contest is vastly different with regard to scoring than the traditional contest offered by Draftkings for DFS golf.
If you are not familiar with the rules for the showdown contest I recommend that you check out the Draftkings website for more details.
Here are my Draftkings player selections for the first round showdown contest!
Xander Schauffele $9,600
The 27 year old American has played eight tournaments on the PGA Tour since the beginning of August. In those eight events just mentioned, Xander has an average first round score of 68.125.
Xander fired a second round 65 at the 2019 Masters en route to an eventual second place result.
Patrick Cantlay $9,300
The 28 year old American fired a first round 63 at the Shriners Hospitals For Children Open last month on his way to an eventual eighth place result. Additionally, Cantlay won the ZOZO Championship @ Sherwood two weeks ago.
The American finished ninth at the 2019 Masters.
Tyrell Hatton $8,700
Hatton’s first round scoring average in has last four rounds played (PGA and European Tours combined) is 66.75. I think many fantasy golf fans are staying away from the Englishman this week due to his past results at the Masters, which have not been great. I won’t be making that mistake. Hatton is a much better golfer now than he was 18 months ago. This guy is the real deal.
Louis Oosthuizen $7,900
The 2010 Open champion seems to always play well at major championships. Apparently, Oosthuizen needs the bright lights of an important event on the PGA Tour to get the competitive juices flowing. Let me illustrate my point with data. Louis’s last two top six finishes on the PGA Tour are as follows: third-2020 U.S. Open, sixth-2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
In summary, I would not be shocked at all if Louis fired a first round 65 and was the leader of the 2020 Masters on Thursday afternoon.
Cam Smith $7,400
The Australian arrives at the week’s Masters on the heels of three consecutive top 24 finishes on the PGA Tour, including a fourth place result at the ZOZO Championship @ Sherwood.
In his last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Smith has only posted an individual round score over par once. It should also be noted that Smith has previously played well at Augusta National. Cam finished fifth at the 2018 Masters.
Matt Wallace $6,900
Wallace finished fourth at the Memorial Tournament in July, 19th at the UK Championship in August, and second at the Scottish Championship last month.
The Englishman’s scoring average in his last seven first rounds played (PGA and European Tours combined) is 68.71.
